AUGUST: Rooted in Christ, Built on The Rock

A Letter from Sol

Hi friend,

Can you believe we’re already in August? This year has moved so fast — new projects, new seasons, new versions of ourselves being shaped along the way.

If July felt like a whirlwind for you the way it did for me — juggling work, family, ministry, and everything in between — I want August to feel different. Not slower, necessarily, but steadier. Because steadiness doesn’t come from having fewer storms. It comes from where we’ve planted our roots.

This month, I’ve been sitting with Matthew 7:24-25 — the parable of the wise man who built his house on the rock. The storms came for him too. Rain fell, floods rose, winds beat against that house just like everyone else’s. The difference wasn’t the absence of trouble. It was the foundation underneath it.

So this August, I’m inviting you into six words that will guide us — one for each part of the word itself. Not a checklist to finish, but a rhythm to return to, again and again, whenever life tries to shake us loose.

Introduction

Every year, a new month brings a fresh page — a chance to reset our intentions and realign our hearts. But intentions without a foundation tend to crumble the moment life gets hard.

That’s the heart behind this month’s theme: AUGUST — Rooted in Christ. Built on the Rock.

Using the letters of the month itself, we’re walking through six words that anchor us in faith, even in the middle of ordinary — and sometimes overwhelming — days:

A – Abide
U – Understand
G – Grow
U – Unify
S – Serve
T – Trust

These aren’t just pretty words for a devotional graphic. They’re an invitation to examine what your life is actually built on — and to choose, deliberately, to build on the Rock.

A – Abide

“Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.” — John 15:4

Abiding isn’t a one-time decision. It’s a daily, sometimes hourly, choice to stay connected to the Source.

As a wife, mom, and business owner, I know how easy it is to let “abiding” slip to the bottom of the to-do list — squeezed in only if there’s time left over. But Jesus didn’t say visit the vine. He said abide. Stay. Remain. Make your home there.

This August, abiding might look like:

Starting your day with even five quiet minutes before the noise begins
Keeping Scripture open on your desk between tasks
Whispering a prayer mid-meeting instead of waiting until “quiet time”

Reflection prompt: Where in your daily rhythm have you been visiting God instead of abiding in Him?

U – Understand

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5

This is a tricky one, because it’s not about understanding everything — it’s about understanding rightly. Understanding that our own wisdom has limits. Understanding who God is, even when we don’t understand what He’s doing.

This month, ask for understanding in two directions:

Understanding God — through His Word, prayer, and community
Understanding yourself — your season, your limits, your calling right now

You don’t need to have it all figured out. You need a deeper understanding of the One who does.

Reflection prompt: What’s one situation right now where you’re leaning on your own understanding instead of surrendering it?

G – Grow

“But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” — 2 Peter 3:18

Growth is rarely glamorous. It happens in unseen seasons — the early mornings, the quiet obedience, the moments no one applauds.

As someone who’s built a business, a brand, and a home life all at once, I’ve learned growth isn’t about doing more. It’s about becoming more — more patient, more faithful, more surrendered.

This August, growth might look like:

Reading one book of the Bible slowly instead of skimming many
Asking a mentor or accountability partner one honest question
Letting go of a habit that’s kept you stagnant

Reflection prompt: What would spiritual growth look like for you this month if no one else were watching?

U – Unify

“I appeal to you, brothers, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be united in the same mind and the same judgment.” — 1 Corinthians 1:10

Unity starts small — in our own homes, our friendships, our teams. Before we can be a light of unity to the world, we have to guard it in the relationships closest to us.

This month, consider:

Reaching out to mend a strained relationship
Choosing unity over “being right” in a disagreement
Praying for the people you lead — your team, your family, your community

Reflection prompt: Where has division crept in quietly — and what’s one step toward unity you can take this week?

S – Serve

“For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.” — Mark 10:45

Serving is where faith stops being theoretical and becomes tangible. It’s in the meals cooked, the emails answered with kindness, the time given even when your calendar is full.

For those of us running businesses or leading teams, serving isn’t separate from our work — it is our work, when done with the right heart.

This August, serve by:

Doing one act of service without expecting recognition
Serving your family with the same excellence you give your clients
Asking someone, “How can I help you this week?” — and meaning it

Reflection prompt: Who is God placing in front of you right now to serve — and are you willing?

T – Trust

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart… In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” — Proverbs 3:5-6

We end where every foundation must end: trust. Not trust that everything will go the way we planned — but trust that God is faithful even when it doesn’t.

Trust is the rock beneath every other letter in this acronym. Without it, abiding feels like duty, growth feels like pressure, and serving feels like burnout. With it, everything shifts from striving to resting.

Reflection prompt: What’s one area of your life right now where you’re being asked to trust instead of control?

Personal Reflection

If I’m honest, this month’s theme found me before I found it.

Right now, I’m in the thick of building SolDesk from the ground up — laying foundations, making decisions, showing up for my family, and carrying the weight of “having it all together” as a work-at-home mom, all at the same time. Building something new has a way of exposing exactly how deep your roots actually go. It’s tempting to build fast when you’re excited and eager to see results. But fast isn’t the same as deep, and I don’t want to find that out the hard way when the storms come.

Writing this acronym has been as much for me as it is for you. I don’t have August figured out. But I know Who I’m building on — and I want every part of SolDesk, and every part of me, to be built on that same Rock.

If you’re in a season of striving, exhaustion, or uncertainty — you’re not alone, and you’re not behind. You’re just being invited to root down before you build up.

August Declaration

Speak this over your life this month:

This August, I choose to abide in Christ above all else. I choose understanding over my own limited wisdom. I choose to grow in quiet faithfulness, even when no one is watching. I choose unity in my relationships and my home. I choose to serve with a willing and humble heart. And above all, I choose to trust — not because I understand everything, but because I know the One who does.

I am rooted in Christ. I am built on the Rock. Let the storms come — my foundation will hold.

Prayer for August

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for a new month and a fresh invitation to root myself in You. Teach me to abide daily, to seek understanding that comes from You, and to grow in quiet, faithful ways. Unite me with the people You’ve placed in my life, and give me a servant’s heart that reflects Yours. Above all, grow my trust in You — not in my own understanding, but in Your perfect faithfulness.

When the storms of this month come — and I know they will — let my foundation hold, because it is built on You, the Rock that cannot be shaken.

In Jesus’ name, Amen.
